How did you get in your current position?
As a high school teacher of seniors (at Niskayuna) and a parent of college-aged children, I realized that the college process can be quite complex and that there is a lot of misinformation out there. I have seen too many talented students disappointed and frustrated with their college results, and there is no need for that to happen. So I looked into earning a certificate in College Admissions Counseling and here I am!
What’s your favorite part of what you’re doing?
I love helping to clarify what can be a stressful process. When I sit down with families and we begin to work through the steps to become successful candidates for acceptances and scholarships, everyone relaxes and feels so much better. The college process requires lots of planning and effort, but I try to make it fun. It is an adventure in learning about possibilities for your future! I get so excited when the acceptances come in. It is wonderful to be able to share in their success!
What is your biggest challenge and how are you meeting it?
I want every student to know that there exists a good post-secondary study option out there that will fit his/her needs. There are funds and resources to support you. My personal challenge is to find ways to reach more students. I have arranged several presentations at continuing education programs and public libraries, and am open to any suggestions and referrals our wonderful Women@Work community could provide.
